Drift Surprises-Assesment 3

The drifts themselves were supposed to present a manner for one to experience their surroundings in a new way, so it should come as no surprise that I encountered many unexpected situations and discoveries throughout the process. While on my first drift I ended up exploring the area until late at night and as I was returning home I came across a dumpster alongside a restaurant, so I decided to try and capture some audio while opening and closing the dumpster lid and holding my mic in different positions. After recording for a minute I thought I could hear someone yelling “Hey!” I took off my headphones and could still hear someone yelling but wasn’t sure where it was coming from, but then I looked up and saw an older woman in her pajamas asking me what in earth I was doing so late at night messing around with the dumpster. I had no idea there were apartments above the restaurant, but the point of the drift was to discover the unexpected about the area and I guess I did, for better or worse. I explained to her that I was working on a project, apologized, and went on my way a little shocked and feeling kind of bad. Another unanticipated event occurred later while reviewing my recorded audio, I came across an audio clip that I didn’t remember recording, but sounded really cool. After thinking about it for a while I figured that I must have accidentally left my mini-disc player on record mode, while I was walking/sliding over and icy part of the road. Although I didn’t end up posting the final recording on my drift blog because I couldn’t be completely sure of where I recorded it or what it was of, I was surprised that I was able to capture a very unique audio experience without even meaning to and not noticing the interesting qualities of it until I reviewed it later at home. One day after already exploring my drift area for my second visual drift, my girlfriend and I decided to walk and get something to eat, and since we were going to be heading through my drift area I grabbed my camera just in case. A block away from my apartment we ran into a girl who also had a camera, and must have seen me carrying mine, because she pointed to an area another block down and said, “There are some really cool shots over there.” I decided to take her advice and was very happy I did because I captured some of my favorite images there (to check out a slideshow of the still images I captured there click here), and it really made me glad to be living in a place where I could run into someone random on the street who was also interested in exploring her surroundings in a creative manner.
